After the appointment ceremony, Assistant Dean Sun Kai of EEA chaired a special academic lecture by Professor Goran Strbac, with the theme of “Cost Effective Transition to Secure Low Carbon Energy Future”. In his report, Professor Goran Strbac systematically introduces the major challenges brought by large-scale new energy access and a large number of new types of loads to the operation of the power system, and proposes solutions for the transition of the power energy system to low-carbon and intelligent in an economically efficient manner from various dimensions such as adjustment of grid frequency standards, development of flexibility resources, optimization of grid structure, integrated energy integration, large-scale utilization of hydrogen energy, and enhancement of system resilience through multi-energy microgrids. After the report, the teachers and students of EEA had a lively discussion with Professor Goran Strbac on the revision of frequency standards in future power systems, the role of energy storage, and the application of artificial intelligence and other hot issues.

Professor Goran Strbac is a renowned scholar in the field of electrical power and energy. He is currently a professor and the Chairman of Power and Energy Systems at Imperial College London. He obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Belgrade in 1989 and 1994, respectively. He was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and joined Imperial College London in 2005. Professor Goran Strbac’s research covers the operation and investment optimization of low-carbon energy systems, energy infrastructure reliability, and future energy markets. For over 20 years, he has led the research and development of innovative analytical methods in the field of energy system integration, involving power, transportation, natural gas and thermal infrastructure. His research results have been widely adopted by the government, regulatory agencies, and the energy industry, providing important cost-benefit assessment basis for the low-carbon and intelligent evolution of the energy system. Professor Goran Strbac has published 5 monographs and more than 300 papers. Currently he is serving as a UK Member of CIGRE, Chief Author of the Third Working Group of IPPC, Member of the Energy System Integration Working Group of the European Energy Research Alliance, and Member of the Policy Science Advisory Working Group of the European Academy of Sciences, leading the writing of the report “Systematic Approach to European Energy Transition”. Professor Goran Strbac also serves as the British Director of the Joint Research Centre for Smart Power and Energy Systems at Tsinghua University-Imperial College London, and together with Professor Kang Chongqing, he co-led the establishment of this centre. During the first phase of collaboration (2019-2022), the two sides jointly completed two international cooperative projects, organized multiple international conference forums, achieved multiple rounds of personnel exchanges, and collaborated on the publication of more than 10 papers, which were outstanding cooperation results.
